RVAG BACKGROUND The River valley Art guild is a group of people who enjoy creating visual art. The idea for a Guild arose in 2005 among a few artists and friends who came up with the idea of forming a local group to consider matters of mutual interest and benefit. Artists usually work alone, but can gain from sharing with others. Meetings are a good place to network, to share information about materials and other resources. The Guild provides an opportunity to discuss concerns, share skills through demonstrations, enjoy inspirational material, and even to critique each other’s work-in-progress in a supportive way. The Guild has held annual exhibitions, at the Pembroke Legion, the first in 2006. The annual exhibition is an opportunity to showcase the members’ work. Guild membership is $25.00 a calendar year. All artists are welcome – beginners, intermediates, and well-established, all ages, young and old, working in any medium. MEMBERS participating in the Deep River Library Show Susan Blakeney Alan Docherty aleddoc@bell.net Originally from Scotland and for the past 40+ years resident in the Upper Ottawa Valley. More or less self taught after receiving some tuition in the 1980’s from the late Warren Thurston (Deep River) and latterly from Adrianna Saba (Eganville). Over the past few years has been the recipient of various awards in juried shows Since retirement, several years ago, now spending time painting a wide variety of subjects exclusively in watercolours. Tel: 613 635 7667 Gerri Roy Kay Ranger James Lightle www.jameslightle.ca James was born and raised in Port Hope Ontario where he lived with his parents, Cathy and Greg Sr. and older brother Greg Jr. After attending a semester at Ottawa University and witnessing a touching Remembrance Day Ceremony, James knew his destiny. In December 2000 James joined the Armed Forces along side his older brother Greg. Quickly, James moved up the ranks to become a Corporal, specially trained in Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) and a Combat Diver and had been on tour in both Bosnia and Afghanistan. After only a few short months into his tour in Afghanistan in 2006, James’ vehicle was hit by an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) while on patrol. James suffered from numerous physical injuries including a shattered ankle, which was career ending. While back in Canada recovering from his physical trauma, his emotional trauma came to the surface presenting as PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). While receiving treatment for his PTSD, James luckily discovered painting and photography as a therapeutic outlet for his emotional trauma. Today, James has expanded his vision and skill with carving from Bison horn, Deer antler and Tagua Nut. James has participated in shows hosted by the River Valley Art Guild and the Deep River Library Arts Committee. His work is also hanging in the Ganaraska Art and Framing Gallery in Port Hope Ontario. Jaime Lee Lightle Born in Ottawa, now of military wife of just over a year, Jaime’s artistic background is predominantly in classical music however, she did study visual part time in high school. A graduate of Carleton University with a bachelor’s degree in Canadian Studies, she has spent most of her career in change management. Since moving to Pembroke in 2009, she has since picked up the brush again and works in all mediums such as oil, acrylic and watercolour. Carolyn Eaton Raised on the West Coast, Carolyn found early inspiration in the works and site locations of Emily Carr. Now living at Petawawa Point, she finds great subjects for her work, primarily in water-based medium, in the beauty of the Upper Ottawa Valley. Carolyn is a participant in the River Valley Art Guild and a member of the Valley Arts Council, both based in Pembroke. Sharon Beisenthal Sharon is a local artist who was born in Pembroke, Ontario. She is a member of the River Valley Art Guild. At a young age her love of art developed. She started painting in oils after taking some classes in oil painting. Sharon now enjoys working in watercolours after studying watercolour from Adrianna Saba of Eganville, Ontario and the late Warren Thurston of Deep River, Ontario. Her paintings are inspired by life around her – landscapes from areas in the Ottawa Valley, from other parts of Canada, florals and portraits. Today, as an artist, Sharon’s paintings are noted for soft colour and tranquil compositions.
